Embedded Emissions
Carbon & ClimateEmbedded emissions (also called embodied emissions or grey emissions) are the total greenhouse gas emissions generated during the production, transport, and processing of a product or material before it reaches the end user. Under CBAM, importers must report embedded emissions in covered goods (cement, steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity, hydrogen). Calculation uses actual production data where available, or default values from the EU database. Understanding embedded emissions is critical for Scope 3 reporting and supply chain decarbonisation.
